India has welcomed the 7-Point Agreement reached among the political parties in Nepal to take the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants to its "logical conclusion.’’

In a statement, India said the agreement, which broke three years of political deadlock, provided a firm basis for successfully concluding the remaining aspects of Nepal’s peace process.

Congratulating the people and political parties in Nepal for their commitment to peacefully resolving outstanding issues in a spirit of consensus, India said it fully supported efforts to pave the way for Nepal’s transition to a pluralistic and inclusive multi-party democracy.

As The Hindu has reported, Nepal’s political parties reached an agreement on the peace process, Constitution writing and power sharing late on Tuesday evening. Besides settling the vexed issue of a deal for former Maoist combatants, the parties have also agreed to prepare the first draft of the Constitution by this month end. The parties are also understood to have worked out a power sharing arrangement after the elections are held under the new Constitution.
