India notified of Prabakaran’s death

December 13, 2009 01:28 am | Updated 01:28 am IST - NEW DELHI

Sri Lanka has formally notified India of the death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam chief Velupillai Prabakaran. This will help to extinguish the request for his extradition for masterminding the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Every year India has been sending an extradition request to the External Affairs Ministry in Colombo.

With the killing earlier this year, the Ministry recently issued a note verbale stating Prabhakaran has died. “This is part of the formal judicial mechanism. This formal conveyance of information was imminent,” said diplomatic sources.
