Climate change posesan existential threat, says Alan Rusbridger.

India must plan to reduce its dependence on coal, which is having “devastating” effects, Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of The Guardian , has said. “…the fear of the rest of the world about India is that it is going to burn vast amounts of dirty coal in very inefficient ways.”

Mr. Rusbridger was speaking to The Hindu on the recent campaign launched by The Guardian called “Keep it in the Ground”. It draws attention to the global impact of climate change from dependence on fossil fuels and argues the moral and financial case for moving to renewable energy. India must “look at the issue of subsidies by which fossil fuels are supported,” he said. “Climate change poses an existential threat to the species and we haven’t got long to do something about it,” said Mr. Rusbridger.
