The Supreme Court should go in for scientific indexing of the jewels found at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram to prevent theft and substitution, a forensic scientist has said.

Temple jewellery would have the individual artisan's signature and scientific indexing would help preserve the signature, besides preventing stealing or faking, P. Chandra Sekharan, former Director of the Tamil Nadu Forensic Science Department, told The Hindu on Monday, speaking from Bangalore on the phone.
The Supreme Court-appointed five-member committee on Monday started evaluating the large number of articles found in the temple vaults.
The committee is headed by the Director-General of the National Museum, C.V. Ananda Bose.
Mr. Chandra Sekharan said his views were based on his experience of having presented forensic evidence before the Royal High Court in London in connection with the theft of a Nataraja idol from a temple at Pathur in Tamil Nadu in 1990.
