Member of the Assembly Manjalamkuzhi Ali submitted his resignation on Tuesday. An aide of Mr. Ali handed over the resignation letter to the private secretary to the Speaker today.
Representing Mankada constituency in Malappuram district, Mr. Ali had won the election to the Assembly as an independent supported by the Left Democratic Front. He had announced his plan to resign a fortnight ago alleging that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership was trying to isolate him, and he could no longer bear insulting remarks from the leadership. The CPI (M) leaders had accused him of acting against the interests of the party in Malappuram district.
A businessman by profession, Mr. Ali was associated with the film industry for about 15 years. He was also director of the Kairali Television Channel and general secretary of the Pravasi Sanghom. He was representing Mankada for a second term in the Assembly. His previous election was in 2001. In the last elections (2006), he defeated senior Muslim League leader for former Minister M. K. Muneer.
The Muslim League welcomed him to join the party, following straining of his relations with the CPI (M). However, Mr. Ali said, while announcing his plans for resignation, that he would continue to be an independent political and social worker.
