Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the changes made in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have meant early celebrations of Diwali as the “sweeping changes” would help small and medium businesses who were affected by the introduction of the new tax regime and safeguard the interests of the public.
Mr Modi hailed the changes and stressed that the entire country would benefit from the changes that were brought in during the meeting of the GST Council held in New Delhi on Friday.
The main changes include reducing compliance burden of filing returns from monthly to quarterly.
“We made changes after getting feedback from the stakeholders because we don’t want the business class to get caught in red tapism or stuck in bureaucracy,” Mr. Modi said.
On the first day of his whirlwind tour, Mr. Modi travelled from Dwarka and Okha to Rajkot, Chotila and Gandhinagar, to lay the foundation for new projects including a sea link bridge between Okha and Bet Dwarka. A new airport in Rajkot and inauguration of the new IIT campus at Gandhinagar were also on the itinerary. In view of the crucial Assembly polls, the BJP governments in centre and State have been on a spree of launching projects like the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train for which the foundation stone was laid last month.
