The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday demanded an immediate apology from actor Aamir Khan, accusing him of having defamed the medical profession in the May 27 episode of his TV show Satyamev Jayate, and warned him of legal action if he didn't do so.
IMA secretary general Dr. D.R. Rai told journalists: “Every profession has its black sheep. Even the profession to which Aamir Khan belongs, [acting] is in the news every now and then due to some ill practices in the industry. But it can safely be claimed that the white sheep will always outnumber the black ones in every field.
“It was extremely wrong on the part of a responsible citizen of the country and a public figure like Aamir Khan, whom most of the citizens of the country might even consider as their role model, to put the rotten eggs over the good ones,” he said.

I think number 8 is an absolutely killer idea. Most people seem afraid of giving away the best content. But i’m pretty sure that the people who do … get the most back in return
no electricity,no water, no roads, no jobs, falling rupee value, huge population, corrupt politicians, illiterate masses, poverty, manipulating the public with freebies, inadequate infra structures, self proclaimed genius cum actors, the easiest job is to blame doctors.
Amir Khan did not do or say anything wrong. On one hand if he exposed the corruption and greed in the medical profession, he also showed there are good doctors do whatever they can to help the public. Those IMA officials/Doctors who are not smart enough to understand the main point of the show and took it personally in a wrong way, they do not have enough intellect to qualify as a doctor and thus do no deserve to be in this profession. IMA always tried to suppress the complaints against the doctor's wrongdoing and is doing the same right now by trying to suppress the voice of Amir Khan. The whole nation knows the fact and condition of our health care system. Instead of playing politics, IMA should focus on cleaning the system and giving the care and respect common people deserves. I don't understand why IMAs doesn't put a ban on prescribing brand names. Doctors should only prescribe the generic name of the medicine required and patient should have freedom to go and buy any brand he can afford.
This is just ridiculous! When Dr. Talwar on the show has accepted of the corruption within the profession, and given that it has been fairly proven in the society, why should Dr. Raj come out now and ask Aamir to apologize? This is the problem with autority in India - when you have power, you don't work; but when someone complains or tries to bring a change, you sulk. I hope the IMA does the stupid by going to the court. They will realise it there, if they are asked to justify the things that came out during the show. Guilty until proven innocent, or in this case, just guilty.
Dr.D R Rai said that people from acting profession are in news due to ill practices. But those ill practices are most likely not to affect normal public, but doctor is considered next to good. These corrupt doctors who are in big number are killing the female fetus for money. The point aamir raised hit the chord, if this continues as aamir said me may have to buy girls to marry them.
IMA secretary general Dr. D.R. Rai, can you tell us that being a IMA secretary general how many doctors you had suspended or taken hard steps against them for their wrong practice. if your answer is 1 or more then you have rights to blame aamir. but if your answer is zero ( which is actually a big zero )then please let other people do their work.
Apology!! Aamir should stand his ground and should do nothing of that kind. Nobody needs to apologize for speaking the truth. Today we don't have medical services, its medical industry. There are too many black sheeps among doctors. In fact doctors could take 'Sathyameva Jayathe' as an opportunity to apologize to the society and public for their money-mindedness and reform themselves.
Reminds me of the old Roman story of Androcles removing the thorn from
the paw of a lion.
Remove it today the lion would have come to Mr.Aamir claiming
that the wound got infected!
It is a thankless world.
So Quick reaction by IMA? Very often we here from TV channels, newspapers about cases of carelessness by doctors, cases of pushing substandard medicines, etc. etc. etc. But never heard IMA is concerned or speaking about them.
Why is IMA so disturbed by what Aamir Khan said? Is it for the reason
that what Aamir Khan able to do by himself in his show, they are unable
to do with their powers and authority.. That is to identify the "Black
Ships" in their profession. IMA themselves have agreed there are black
sheeps in their profession, but will they care to tell us, how many of
them they have identified till date and have cancelled their Licence. As
we know the no. is 0. So docs stop pointing at someone else, do your
job, if you really know what your job is.
The truth is always bitter. soort to say you that IMA secretary general Dr. D.R. Rai you should accept it because it is best for our country and the most important to the poor people. if he is try to put out the revolutionary idea we must support him.
I appreciate all the efforts the doctors put in creating a healthy society. However these days, there are a lot of cases where medical practice is become a biggest way to mint money, in the right way or wrong. There is very little service orientation these days. And i think even if 1 doctor in a million is doing a malpractice and has been highlighted by someone else, the all the focus should be on punishing the doctor for doing wrong and not making the person who has brought the awareness to apologize. Instead of trying to get Amir Khan apologize, Dr D.R Rai should have announced the action steps to stop such practices as shown in Amir Khan's program.
The good work done by the good doctors will never be enough to cover up the wrong doings by some others.
The IMA should try apologizing to the Major and his family for the death
of his wife by one of their (IMA) members, return the uterus of the
ladies of the village in Andhra, and also to the equally distressed who
came to the show (Forget about the others who were not included). And
once that wrong is corrected they should then ask an apology for
tarnishing the image of doctors.
Yes, there are black sheep in every profession but they dont go
protecting the black sheep.
In my opinion... Aamir khan just exposed the corruption that has always been silenced by this profession. Its a sad state to have students to pay donation fees which doesn't bring any meaning as to why we should even pay for it. Isn't medicine only a prestige profession for those who are capable of doing it? Or are its IMA taking any tom dick n harry into this field.that's the first
Now for the second part. I think he's just brought awareness to the
people to start asking "why is the treatment needed?" "How is it going to help?" if this self awareness has never been brought up, doctors will have the freedom to do what ever they want of course they'll do the needful. But don't you think we the people will want to know?
Thirdly, he did an excelent job in balancing out the good and bad don't you think? He didn't directly criticize the profession. But instead just "woken up the sleeping idiots" that's all...
Aamir's show points out the things which we need to improve. So what if
he targeted a profession. It is stupid to compare Doctors to actors. Do
people go to actors to get cured? People die by taking doctor's
medicine, or die on surgeon's table, or their organs are stolen... has
this happened to anyone while watching a movie, or interacting with an
actor?
I thought IMA would consist of rational and reasonable people.
what amir khan did was good. He should not appologige to doctors.
Mr.Raghavan, I want to ask you when you make a generalised statement that doctors have degraded to lowest level with no ethics, it will apply to your dad too, as he was also a doctor. If so how can you say that he was good surgeon. will you accept that your dad was a corrupt doctor who did not follow ethics? If you dont, then you should agree there are doctors who are good and follow ethics like your dad. We dont say there are no corrupt doctors but we are against generalised statements like you and Amir khan are making. Not all patients who die in casuality are due to medical negligence. If you think your parents died of medical negligence why dont you fight legally? there are many doctors who work day and night for saving the life of people. If you dont agree accept that your dad was a low grade unethical doctor who murdered many of his patients.
I agree with everyone here. Am a doctor myself. The corruption and kick
back system, lack of accountability in health profession in India is
appalling and shocking. No doctor is brought to account. We don't have
doctors losing registration like in the West. How many doctors have been
brought to account annually. Is there an online register to guide lay
persons regarding its members? The Indian Medical Council is spineless
organisation without standards and just self serving. The organisation
should keep its members accountable first!
Mr. Amir is doing very very good job, he should not apologise for this issue, IMA chief himself accepted that medical colleges are run with fake records on inspection, taking money during inspection, and patients are brought in trucks to hospitals during inspection time then why apology? doc themselves admitted that they take commission and now it is increased upto 30%, then why apology? and what about that Andra case of removal of uterus which was again accepted by IMA chief and he promised for the action against that doc who is responsible , then why apology? then why apology? everyone knows what is going on .then why apology? first correct the corrupt docs then show the statistics ,why was chief was numb on the statistics?
In Manipur, doctors are one of the most egoistic professionals you would come across. They will not even speak properly to commoners. I know many doctors who get free trips, suits, stationeries and what not from pharmaceutical companies, and on quid pro quo terms, they would prescribe the latter's branded drugs instead of generic ones. Lab and diagnostic investigations are suggested, rather advised, to be done from certain specified ones! Besides, government docs practise privately at home or non-government hospitals sapping their energy there which should have been conserved for patients in the government hospitals. Rural posted docs are never in full attendance, thanks to fraternal attendance adjustments! These are for all the black sheeps out there, not for those who are real doctors.
Why is IMA making such a loud noise ?. If they were aware that there are some black sheep in their herd what have they done to tame them. How come we never heard about any proactive interventions by IMA to curb medical malpractice ?. Amir has only brought to the attention of the public the symptoms of a malignant disease ( Cancer) that is spreading fast within the medical profession. This disease is called 'Greed', would society be happy to treat just the symptoms or the disease itself at its root cause ?. Time is now ripe for the public to make known the names / addresses of the medical practitioners who indulge in malpractices such as unnecessary investigations, expensive branded drugs etc. Would IMA help set up a web portal where citizens who are harassed by their members can be listed publically so that such malpractices can be decreased ?.
Gungun, 8 yrs old my niece was admitted in Sanjeevan Hospital, Delhi on April 05. She was serious caused typhoid. Doctors did very painful bone marrow test immediately. She came out of danger after 48hrs. On April 08 late evening, nurse injected a drug. Instantly, she screamed loudly and last words "Papa! Bahut dard ho raha hai", she breathed out. Doctors examined and kept on trying to give her artificial respiration. At last, she was gone on ventilator machine at 12 O'clock. Unfortunately, she had left us forever on April 10. We can not understand, why was BM test, nurse injected so hurriedly, doctor told a lie, a virus attacked in her brain, she spent on ventilator machine more than 60hrs while she had no life sign, her uncle and father heard, senior doctor scolded ICU staffs for their negligence and carelessness. Besides it, they kept on busing ICU billing. Everyone suggested to complaint against the hospital in police station but we were in sorrow of losing our loving Gungun.
In a major town of East Godavari, a 2nd class girl student fainted suddenly and turned lill blue after being bitten by a bug. An elder person who came to pick his ward from the school took pity and taken the fainted to Alert Hospital (A reputed private hospital). After waiting for sometime the cheif doctor came and saw the kid who was recovering now and asked the elder person to have the kid tested for HIV. The elder person almost slapped the doc asking does he know what HIV is and why the kid needs such a test. The doc apologized. Such is the plight of docs now. IMA - SET YOUR DOCS RIGHT FIRST THEN ASK SOME ONE ELSE TO APOLOGIZE.
I M A ..is not doing its rightful job..it is only on paper and fighting for pointing their faults...they do not have any ethics but only money..medical profession can not be compared to any profession vaidyo narayana..is the truth of hindu...now it is vaidyo ..money..money ..for money they are doing...fimale foticide..money they are steeling kidny...is it not fault/crime...at any time did they prevent any doctor doing so......IMA has got no moral right to comment on amir khan....if they keep their mouth shut..and sit they can save their face... may god save medical profession
I am a doctor and member of IMA. And I do not want Amir Khan to apologise. In fact, he deserves congratulations for opening the eyes of the public.
The public should stay alert to the fact that no profession and nobody is above board. One should always avail of one's critical faculties and not trust anybody blindly.
I dont agree with Dr Rai that corruption is the domain of few black sheep in the profession. His belief probably comes from the fact that cut-practice is so common, that the average doctor regards it as a legititmate source of income-hardly to be considered unethical or illegal.
Truth is always bitter.Amir does not want to hurt someone feelings but asks very one to
search ones soul. The guilty should apologies not Aamir khan.
IMA why you are taking the things personally? Amir has exposed the
truth of our current medical system. In the show he has also shown the
good side of the story. People like Dr.Shetty, Dr. Sharma etc they are
doing fantastic job for the country. Now if you go to any private
hospital you have package system like 2/3 days stay in hospital. Looks
like hospital system became a tourist spot.
Finally I would like to thanks Amir for exposing the truth of bad
side. "Jago India Jago"
The IMC is firing the first salvo out of a bruised, but bloated ego.
The Medical profession is made up of doctors who have nothing but
their bank balance in mind when they walk into their clinics.
The nexus between them and the pharmaceutical industry, diagnostic
labs is well known. Doctors do not share information with patients
about their illness, prognosis or treatment. (the usual retort when
questions are asked is - "who is the doctor - me or you?" ) Kick
backs are common in the profession (or is that a trade or business?).
Unwanted procedures costing hundreds of thousands of rupees, negligent
deaths at the operating table are known to happen. Most doctors guilty
of negligence never get punished by the law.
With all happening, does the IMC want us to believe that everything is
fine in the medical community? Aamir Khan has nothing to apologize
for. Instead of pursing the "Sue Aamir khan" route, the IMC should do
some introspection to see what is wrong with the community.
My father who too happens to be very good surgeon was having sound knowledge of his field got murdered by the doctors of Indraprasth Appolo hospital Delhi for the sake of money. And mother met the same fate at the hand of doctors of renowned govt. at Delhi. We are not the alone sufferer, the list is endless. Being born and brought up in doctors family, I too go by the version of Amir Khan. Doctors have degraded themselves to the lowest level with no ethics, and have become devils. Do IMA to which my father was life member will investigate the episode in a free manner without biased. Delhi Medical Council is famous for it's biased attitude. Devil doctors are utilizing their best the lawlessness of the country. Now I am of the view that it is better to die on the road than to visit any hospital, as admitting in the hospital will only prolong the suffering of all kind. The IMA and other Medical Councils first of all must regulate this field, or else people will criticize,
The reaction of IMA towards Aamir Khan's last episode exposing the Medical profession is understandable. However I do not hold any brief for Aamir Khan. I watched the show. What was projected was highlighting the extent of corruption in the medical profession. Can the IMA deny this before seeking an apology? The IMA has to recon the ills in the system. When the IMA appointed Lt. Gen as its Director, he resigned after looking at what was going on and found that he could just do nothing to set it right. My own experience, about 40 years ago; I took my daughter to a city's very well known pediatrician with an x-ray taken the day before my visit. He ignored that and insisted that I get a same x-ray in a lab that he suggested and had a letter head printed by the lab that he kept to prescribe!! My respect for that doctor evaporated that moment and I had to accede to his request in the interest of my child. Instead of asking for an apology from Aamer Khan the IMA will do well in setting its house in order.
It is understood,Mr,Khan was not talking about the white sheep but black
one so what is the use in demanding an apology. What Mr.Khan deals are
social issues which many have failed to do what Mr.Khan is doing.
Dr Rai I am sure is an honourable man holding a glorious position in India. IMA members are a mixed bunch of characters, forming a trade union to safe guard their own interest. They have power to discipline their members from compulsory retraining ; withdraw the licence to prctice suspend them for whole life if necessary etc etc. In fact it is almost impossible to make a worthwhile complain to the cosy club of IMC with any result. Yes there are still some rough cut diamond of doctors remained in India for the poor and down trodden. Our thanks and gratitude will always remain for those saints.
JOURNALISM thrives on negative news..The IMA could have talked to AMIR KHAN DIRECTLY AND SORT OUT THE ISSUE. Amir is a level headed person he can undo any damage NARAYANA HRIDALAYA AND ARVIND EYE HOSPITAL are appreciated by british medias great weekly economist35
The IMA has the sheer effrontery to demand an apology for having exposed their members and their incompetence? I along with millions other public spirited patriots will be happy to defend Mr.Aamir Khan and in turn sue this corrupt organization. It is time the nation rises and demands excellence from its physicians and their ilk.
Now, what did Aamir do wrong? Even he was speaking about the so called
black sheeps. He didn't defame the entire doctors of this country. If you
doctors believe that you are innocent why do you even bother?
All of you know very well that the incidents which were revealed in the
last episode actually happen everywhere. The real life examples and the
people interviewed in the last episode were not fake. You all know that.
We, the youth of this country, are with Aamir and we strongly support the show. We all can understand, such revealings bring discomfort to you. But you too know, it's the bitter truth.
This is ridiculous! Aamir Khan and Satyamev Jayate are doing what no one
else in India had the guts to do. The IMA should apologize to the whole nation for letting the healthcare of the nation get so bad, and then fix the problems. have personally suffered due to lack of attention given to my father
in emergency ward.
I still feel, the doctors are doing a great job out there. Working
hard day in and day out. Treating patients and healing them. But what
disturbs me is the thin line between “work” and responsibility.
Unfortunately today Ek doctor ke liye ek mariz ek bimar sharer hai.
Bus. And not human being. The first thought that came to my mind was
that, I am an Indian.I have lived in this India.I have walked the
dirty streets, I have worked in dingy buildings and I have seen the
sarkari daftar (slow working offices). I am still tolerant when it
comes to postal, police and railway procedures … but this is a
HOSPITAL. And this is a matter of life and death. We just cannot be
tolerant here.Imagine if there is only one black sheep in this
profession and he treats YOU!
Dr Rai,It is very unfortunate that you are asking for the apology. Aamir Khan aplogy will do nothing. Truth is out there and people know that Doctor's aare part of grey corporatization of Medical services for enormous profits. Why not Doctors say apology to Indian Population for the harm they have done. Aamir Khan apology will not bring the lost fame back Dr Rai.
IMA is barking up a wrong tree. In institutions like IMA, one black sheep is enough to cast entire institution as black. One simple reason: they are dealing with lives of others. Film world doesn't give or take life of ordinary human beings. IMA should get real.
