Icon of Indian cinema, says Manmohan

President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a large number of political leaders condoled the death of veteran film-maker Yash Chopra on Sunday, describing him as an iconic personality and a creative genius.

Mr. Chopra was a versatile film-maker and his demise was a great loss for the Indian film industry, Mr. Mukherjee said in his condolence message.

Dr. Singh said he was an “icon of Indian cinema” who entertained many generations with his rare creativity.

“He will be remembered by millions of his fans around the world and his work as a director and producer will be treasured by the nation for many generations,” he said in his message.

Mr. Ansari said, “His valuable contribution to Hindi cinema and the wholesome entertainment his films gave us will be long remembered.”

In Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the veteran director played an important role in making Hindi films globally popular. His films were entertaining, a mixture of sensitivity, emotions and action, he said. — PTI
