I have not suggested Kalam’s name: Siddiqui

Samajwadi Party has not yet decided on any name for the Presidential candidate, its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Tuesday, distancing himself from the comments made by party colleague Shahid Siddiqui who had favoured A.P.J. Abdul Kalam but made a U-turn.

“The party has not taken any decision on this,” Mr. Yadav told reporters when asked about whom the SP would support for the Presidentship.

When pointed out that his party colleague Shahid Siddiqui had favoured Mr. Kalam, Mr. Yadav dismissed it, saying “it may be his personal view but the party has not decided yet.”

Mr. Siddiqui himself made a U-turn on the issue today, claiming that media had distorted his comment.

“I was asked by the media and I had said that if there is a consensus on Kalam, then we will support him. I have not suggested his name,” he told reporters in Parliament House complex.

“There is no consensus in the party, the party has not taken any decision and the party has not even considered any name,” Mr. Siddiqui said.

He had yesterday favoured Mr. Kalam for the Presidentship.
