I did everything legally, says Kamla Beniwal

Accused of being involved in a land-grab case

August 10, 2014 01:52 am | Updated November 28, 2021 09:01 pm IST - JAIPUR:

Kamla Prasad Beniwal, who was sacked as Mizoram Governor earlier this week, said she had done nothing illegal.

On her arrival at Sanganer Airport on Saturday, Ms. Beniwal said: “Whatever I have done is within the purview of law,” while refusing to respond to reporter’s questions.

Anti-Modi slogans

There were a number of National Students Union of India activists to receive her but no Congress leader came to meet her. They shouted anti-Narendra Modi slogans. Ms. Beniwal did not entertain reporters even at her residence in Malviya Nagar but did meet some well wishers.

Ms. Beniwal has been accused of being involved in a Rs. 1000-crore land-grab case as member of a farmers’ cooperative society which was said to have fraudulently procured khatedari (ownership) rights of the leased land and subsequently claimed compensation against part of the land which was developed into residential colonies by the government.

Members found guilty

While the Registrar of Cooperatives had found all 18 members guilty of fraud way back in 2012, investigation was initiated after an activist filed a petition in the court.

Unfair means

The District Collector had also found the cooperative society guilty of seeking compensation by unfair means and recommended appropriate action against the members in April this year.

However, since Ms. Beniwal held a Constitutional post, no action could be taken against her.

The case will come up for hearing on August 27.
