December 03, 2013 01:46 am | Updated 01:46 am IST - Patna:

In a shocking incident, the government hospital in Bihar’s Begusarai district declared a patient dead, whom the family later found to be alive.

The glaring medical lapse took place at the Sadar hospital in Begusarai, where the HIV patient (name withheld) was admitted on November 11.

“On November 26, the hospital declared him dead and told us to take him away,” the patient’s brother told The Hindu on the phone. “They also issued a death certificate and asked us to pay Rs. 200. He was being brought home in an ambulance, but the family noticed that he was alive. When his face was uncovered, he was looking at everyone. When we brought him home he was able to take some liquid food,” he said.

After the local media highlighted the discrepancy, the hospital authorities instituted a probe into the matter.
