Actor and BJP MP Hema Malini’s driver, Mahesh Chand Thakur, was arrested on Friday on charges of overspeeding and causing death by negligence, after the collision involving her Mercedes resulted in the death of a four-year-old girl and injuries to four others on Thursday night. Thakur was later granted bail.

An FIR was lodged against the driver under various Sections of the IPC at the Kotwali Thana in Dausa. Thakur was produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pallavi Sharma who granted him bail.

Four-year-old killed

Hanuman Mahajan, who lost his four-year-old daughter Sonam in the accident and was among the four injured, filed the complaint, the Kotwali SHO said. He said both vehicles were seized.

The 66-year-old actor underwent a surgery for her wounds at Fortis hospital here and was doing fine, doctors said. She was also treated for a minor fracture on her nose.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Hema Malini’s daughter Esha Deol visited the BJP MP.

‘We were left bleeding on road’

Sonam could have been saved had she been rushed to a hospital with Ms. Hema Malini, father of the girl said as he lay injured at SMS Hospital here. The girl’s mother was still in the dark about her daughter’s death.

“My little girl died in the lap of her mother in car. It is sad that mother is also struggling for her life in the polytrauma ward of SMS and she does not know that Sonam is no more,” Mr. Hanuman Mahajan told reporters at the hospital. For about “20-25 minutes our family of five” lay bleeding on the road in the crashed car, as a doctor took Ms. Hema Malini and others in his car to the hospital, Mr. Mahajan said.
