A well-marked low pressure area has formed over Andaman Sea, and has been forecast to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours, resulting in heavy rainfall of 25 cm or more over the islands, Met office said on Friday.
“The well marked low pressure area over South Andaman Sea and (its) neighbourhood would concentrate into a deep depression during the next 24 hours and further intensify thereafter,” a bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department this afternoon said.
The weather office warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with “isolated extremely heavy” rainfall of 25 cm or more on November 24 and 25 over Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre here said the Northeast monsoon was rigorous over coastal Andhra Pradesh, which was hit by cyclone Helen two days ago, and rainfall had occurred at many places in the state.
In the rainfall data recorded till 8.30 am on Friday, Gudivada (Krishna district) received 13 cm of rain, followed by Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada (also Krishna district) at 10 cm each, it said.
In its forecast for the next 24 hours, RMC said rain or thundershowers would occur at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, north interior Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
Isolated rain or thundershowers may occur over Telangana, Rayalaseema, coastal and south interior Karnataka, it added.
