The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Delhi government on a public interest litigation seeking a direction for transferring the reins of the cricket’s regulatory body to the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to make it accountable to the public so that the game is saved from future disgrace.
Issuing the notices, a Division Bench of Justice Darmar Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath asked the respondents to file replies by August 14.
The petitioner, non-government organisation Association for Social and Humanitarian Affairs, through its counsel Rahul Raj Malik, stated that the Ministry should declare the BCCI a national sport federation under it or form a committee to run its affairs.
It also sought directions for a probe into the betting syndicate having foreign roots, setting up of a fast track court for speedy trial of the recent spot-fixing accused and setting up of a committee of former judges and eminent personalities to suggest rules and regulations for running the game in a transparent manner.
The petitioner added that a political party can be voted out of power for their omissions and commissions but cricket lovers have no remedy if they are cheated.
The Court had earlier asked the petitioner to amend the prayers. The notices were issued on an amended petition.
