The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the city police to file a status report on the ongoing probe into the death of Sunanada Pushkar, wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
A Bench of Justices G S Sistani and Chander Shekhar directed the police to place within three days a report during a hearing of BJP leader Subramanian Swamy’s plea for a court-monitored probe by a CBI-led special investigation team (SIT) into the matter.
The Bench gave the direction after the police standing counsel, Rahul Mehra, informed the court that the status report of the investigating agency was given to him in the court room and he wanted to go through it before placing it on record. A SIT was constituted in the matter, he noted.
Mr. Mehra said the BJP leader’s petition had raised serious allegations against the police probing the matter, so the investigating agency must be given time to place their stand.
The court fixed the matter for hearing on August 1 and directed that advance copy of the status report be supplied to to Mr. Swamy, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the CBI.
Mr. Swamy has alleged that “inordinate delay” has been caused in the investigation “which is a blot on the justice system”.
Pushkar was found dead in a suite of a five-star hotel in south Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014.
