Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare has supported BJP MP Varun Gandhi’s private member’s Bill on the right to recall legislators.
In a two-page letter, Mr. Hazare said he had been demanding a similar legislation since 2008 and that it would “revolutionise elections.” He further demanded that there should be a provision that voters could reject unsuitable candidates “before they stood for elections.”
Mr. Hazare said the NOTA or none of the above option on the ballot machines was an “incomplete option” that would not make much of the difference to democratic processes.
Mr. Gandhi had moved a private member’s Bill in the Lok Sabha in March asking for the right of the public to recall its representative from the legislature if 75% of them voted their dissatisfaction with his/her performance. “Such a move would deepen democracy,” Mr Gandhi tweeted alongside the facsimile of the letter sent by Mr. Hazare.
