Lieutenant General S.A. Hasnain on Saturday took over as General Officer Commanding of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps headquarters. He replaces Lt. Gen. N.C. Marwah, who will be heading the Command in Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Before handing over charge to his successor, Lt. Gen. Marwah laid a wreath at the War Memorial in the Corps headquarters. A large number of officers were present to bid him farewell.
Lt. Gen. Marwah headed the Srinagar Corps, also known as Chinar Corps, for about a year. This is one of the most prestigious Corps of Army in the country.
A decade ago, he functioned as Colonel General Staff in the counter-insurgency Victory Force in south Kashmir. He later commanded a brigade in Uri, during which period the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service was launched.
Lt. Gen. Hasnain shot into prominence, conducting court-martial proceedings against a Rashtriya Rifles battalion Major who, posted in Handwara, intruded into a civilian family, and allegedly raped a woman and her daughter. e takes over the assignment here at a time when the Army and the State government are at loggerheads over demilitarisation and withdrawal of or amending the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
