Congress MP Gurudas Kamat, who was appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Drinking Water and Sanitation in Tuesday's Cabinet reshuffle, resigned from the post as he was reportedly upset with his portfolio.
In a statement, Mr. Kamat said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi with the request to “relieve” him from his responsibility.
Mr. Kamat was the Minister of State for Information Technology and Communications, before the reshuffle. He did not attend the swearing-in ceremony.
He has, however, denied reports of being disappointed with his portfolio.
“There is no question of disappointment over the portfolio, which is itself an important one, with concerns related to requirements of large sections of the people of the country. The reasons are totally personal and not [in] any defiance of the party leadership as is being made out in certain sections of the media,” he said.
Mr. Kamat said he would continue to be a “committed Congress worker.”
