Two country-made guns and several rounds of cartridges were found in a sleeper coach of the Mumbai-bound Kurla Express on Thursday evening.

Passengers of S1 coach of the train, originating from Howrah, noticed an unclaimed plastic bag on a seat and informed the travelling ticket examiner, a senior official of the South Eastern Railway told The Hindu on Friday.

On arrival at the Panskura station in Purbo Midinipur district, Railway Police and Railway Protection Force personnel took away the bag and found the guns and eight rounds of cartridges inside.

Case registered

“A case has been registered by the GRP at the Panskura thana against unknown persons under the Arms Act,” the senior official said.

The recovery of arms and ammunition on the train is a matter of concern since the route is marked by Maoist-dominated pockets.
