The Modi Government has looked at the law on how to remove Central Bureau of India (CBI) chief Ranjit Sinha in the wake of the scathing comments made by the Supreme Court in the 2G cases.
A CBI release, meanwhile, said on Friday that Mr. Sinha had “recused himself” from the 2G investigations. R.K.Dutta, Additional Director, will now supervise the probe, the statement added.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said at the annual Hindustan Times summit that he had looked at who had the power to remove the CBI chief given that a collegium was the appointing authority. (In any case, Mr. Sinha retires from office on December 2).
Mr. Jaitley alleged that agencies like the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate had been used by previous ruling dispensations to engineer a majority in Parliament.
Asked whether there any political obstacles to the economic reform process, the Finance Minister said with the BJP doing well in State Assembly elections the “arithmetic” in the Rajya Sabha would change.
Already, the government was well placed in any joint sitting of the upper and lower Houses of Parliament.
