An Indian Engineering Services (IES) officer was arrested on Sunday for allegedly sexually assaulting a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The accused, Rakesh Meena (26), works in the Union Ministry of Road Transportation and Highway as an assistant executive engineer.
“Meena was called for questioning and was arrested thereafter,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal. The accused was produced in a city court and remanded in judicial custody.
According to the police, Meena, a native of Rajasthan, had been sexually assaulting the woman since 2012, when she was a minor. He also allegedly stalked her and threatened to kill her.
“The accused would constantly call and message her. The woman did not want to be in touch with him, but he continued to harass her,” said Mr. Biswal.
During interrogation, Meena claimed that they were friends for many years and that she lodged the complaint after they had a fight, said the officer.
Meena has been booked under Sections 4 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and under Sections 354 (assault), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (following a woman), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 509 (insulting modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
