Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has lifted the ban on pain-killer and anti-pyretic drug Analgin and all formulations containing analgin. The drug can now be sold with a warning in India, but it is banned in most parts of the world.
Manufacture and sale of Analgin and formulation containing analgin was banned in June last year by the Drugs Technical Advisory Board following fears of risk to human lives, and since there were alternative drugs available.
Reviewing its decision at the 65th meeting last month, the DTAB decided to revoke the suspension on analgin, and allow its sale and manufacture but with a warning that the drug is indicated for severe pain or pain due to tumour, and for bringing down temperature in refractory cases where other anti-pyretics fail.
