Four-month probe by police failed to achieve any breakthrough

Having failed to achieve any breakthrough, the Goa government has decided to hand over to the CBI probe into the rape of a seven-year-old in a school in Vasco in January.

A Special Investigation Team of the Crime Branch Police had failed to track down the culprit. The girl was raped in the toilet during interval.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told The Hindu on Wednesday that the SIT explored all leads to track down the accused, identified as a middle-aged person by the victim. On another suspect, a relative of the headmistress of the school, Mr. Parrikar said Interpol’s Abu Dhabi-based National Central Bureau had informed that the suspect was in Dubai at the time of the incident on January 14.

With public pressure mounting to nab the accused, the Goa police had said the case required a “broad investigation as it is a blind case.”

The headmistress, a teacher and a clerk were arrested on charges of negligence. They were later released on bail.

The victim’s father approached the Goa Children’s Court seeking a direction to the police to expeditiously investigate the case. He demanded that the court monitor the probe.
