The Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed an amended Goa Lokayukta Bill on the first day of the two-day session.

The Bill, which is a modified version of Goa Lokayukta Bill 2003 sent back to the legislature by the Centre sans Presidential assent because of a couple of legal infirmities, was reintroduced by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat after amending the said clauses.

As the Bill was earlier passed after going through a Select Committee, there was not much debate on it.The former Speaker and senior Congress legislator Dayanand Narvekar hoped that it would pave the way for a better Goa.

Members cutting across party lines hailed Anna Hazare’s movement for creating an awakening in Goa which led to the State reviving the Bill which had virtually gone into cold storage.

Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho, while welcoming the step, warned that the Lokayukta Bill was not an end in itself but just a step in the right direction. He urged the government to take steps to ensure transparency and good governance through e-governance.
