Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday presented the G.K. Reddy Memorial National Award for journalism to senior journalist and television presenter Karan Thapar.

Speaking at the event held at the Teen Murti Bhawan in the capital, Dr. Singh lauded Mr. Thapar’s contribution to the field of journalism: “At a time when our democracy is experiencing some shocks here and there, it is very important that journalists should stand up for defending and promoting the value system which are enshrined in our Constitution. Karan is a shining example of that commitment and I salute him for what he is.”

Speaking about Mr. Reddy, the former PM said, “Mr. G.K. Reddy had great credibility and what appeared in The Hindu under his name was something which everybody respected and waited for. Media should use its freedom to promote objectivity and must support and strengthen democratic values that we all cherish. ”
