Gang-rape accused complains of ill-health

An accused in the >December 16 gang-rape case on Monday complained in the special court that he had been unwell for the past few days.

Pawan Gupta told Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna that he was feeling feverish for the past few days and had nosebleeds since Sunday morning.

After the jail authorities sent a report confirming that he had a medical problem, the judge said that if the jail doctors felt it was necessary, Gupta may be sent to the LNJP Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Gupta’s lawyer told the court that the treatment available at the jail hospital was not sufficient.

After Gupta’s nose started bleeding in front of the judge, he directed police personnel to take him to the Saket court complex dispensary.

Meanwhile, the court asked the authorities of Tihar Jail to file Vinay Sharma’s latest medical report. Sharma has been in a hospital here since May 4 after complaining of high fever, sore throat and mouth ulcers. The court noted that though the latest report was called for, the jail superintendent had sent a medical report dated May 16.

The court on Monday dismissed Sharma’s and Akshay Thakur’s plea seeking permission to undergo a lie-detector test. It ruled that the trial was nearing completion and the polygraph test was a technique used when an investigation was on.
