A 2,500-km-long expedition along the Ganga to “draw attention to the river in the context of global warming” successfully concluded on Saturday at Gangasagar, where the river meets the Bay of Bengal. A film documenting the expedition will be screened at the United Nations Climate Change Summit at Copenhagen in December.
The 12-member crew included climatologist Mohan Munasinghe, vice-chairman of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
The 35-day expedition, led by Swiss adventurer Andy Leemann began on September 14. Mr. Leemann is a Swiss boating leader who has travelled the Amazon, Orinoco, Mekong and Zambezi on previous expeditions.
“Very exciting”
“The experience was very exciting. The descent on the Ganga is very sharp. The river comes down 3,000 metres in a very short time, which seldom happen in other rivers,” Mr. Leemann said.
The team comprising members from six countries river-rafted in the upper reaches of the river from Gangotri to Haridwar.
