One person was killed and 12 were injured as fresh tremors rocked Uttar Pradesh — the fifth since April 25 — on Tuesday. The tremors, said to be the aftershocks of the earthquake which hit Nepal, sent a wave of panic among the people across the State as they rushed out of their houses and offices.

The actual loss of lives and property is being assessed and there is a possibility that the number of casualties may rise.

It was between 12.35 p.m. and 12.40 p.m. when the earth shook for the first time with the tremors lasting about 60 seconds. Mild tremors were felt again around 1.10 p.m. Some buildings developed cracks and some others collapsed in different parts of the State.

Apart from Lucknow, Mainpuri, Shamli, Ballia, Barabanki, Bahraich, Faizabad, Deoria, Jaunpur, Jhansi, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Amethi, Rae Bareli and Pratapgarh districts were rocked by tremors. Tremors were also felt in Gorakhpur, Basti, Varanasi, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, Bareilly and Allahabad.

Roof collapses

Mahesh, 30, a labourer, was killed and two others were injured when the roof of a newly built platform at the cremation ground in Maudaha in Hamirpur district collapsed at around 12.40 p.m. The injured were admitted to the District Hospital in Hamirpur. Giving the details of the other tremor-related incidents, the State IG (anti-terrorist squad), Ram Kumar, told journalists that a woman and a child were injured when an old building collapsed in Kushinagar district. The IG said one child was injured in Ambedkarnagar district.

Reports said six persons were injured when a dilapidated house collapsed in Deoria district. Unconfirmed reports said a 27-year-old was crushed to death and five others injured in Mahoba district when the roof of a under-construction house caved in. The incident occurred at Richha village under Panwari police station limits in Mahoba. The injured were admitted to the local hospital.
