Investigation into the MiD-Day journalist J Dey murder case has moved a step further with the Mumbai Crime Branch police recovering fresh CCTV footage and a stock of emails. The police have also found four new eyewitnesses and prepared more sketches of assailants, which they would not be releasing, a top Crime Branch officer told journalists.

Of the four email accounts Dey had, the police have been able to crack two. The first has personal emails and financial records. The other account has 3,000 emails and 250 drafts. “The draft emails are of published and unpublished stories and backgrounders. We find the drafts to be more important as they contain material he was working on,” the senior officer said.

The email accounts accessed had complex 16-digit passwords. The police had to access the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research server to crack the passwords.
