Around 5,200 French nationals from Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam exercised their franchise in the first round of the French presidential elections here on Sunday.

The polls took place across six booths in Puducherry, Karaikal and Chennai, according to French Consul-General Pierre Fournier.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Fournier said there were two booths in the French Consulate in Puducherry, one in Chennai, one in the Lycee Francaise, one in the French Institute and one in Karaikal.

French citizens from Mahe and Yanam could either vote in at the Chennai booth or elect a representative to cast their votes for them.

The representative would also have to be a French national.

The votes would be counted by a group of volunteers and the result would be sent to France for being counted in the final tally, he said.
