French Defence Minister conveys regret to Antony

France is conducting a high-level enquiry into the killing of two Indians by its troops in the Central African Republic (CAR), French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told his Indian counterpart A.K. Antony on Tuesday.

Mr. Drian called up Mr. Antony on Tuesday to convey his regret over the incident. He also conveyed his condolences to the families of the Indians killed.

“He assured Mr. Antony that the French side was conducting a high-level enquiry into the incident and said the Indian government would be informed about its outcome,” Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday received a letter from French President Francois Hollande, expressing regret over the incident.

Mr. Antony told Mr. Drian that the incident was extremely distressing. He said the French forces in the CAR should ensure proper treatment of the injured Indian nationals and requested that necessary measures be taken to ensure the safety of other Indian nationals in the CAR.

Mr. Drian assured Mr. Antony that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the safety of Indian nationals in that country. He promised best possible medical assistance for the injured.
