Former Home Ministry official files affidavit against CBI

Says he was targeted for declining to make false statements

September 12, 2014 01:47 am | Updated 01:47 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A former Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Internal Security Division has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court alleging that he was “harassed” by the CBI for declining to make false statements indicting his senior officers in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. The former Home Ministry official, R.V.S. Mani, claimed that this took place in 2013. The affidavit is a follow-up to his statements in a letter to the Home Ministry complaining of how he was coerced at the office of the Special Investigation Team of the CBI in Gandhinagar on June 22, 2013

In his letter, Mr. Mani had said “during the course of recording of my statement, there was a difference between the facts in my knowledge and the framing of the same by the IG, SIT, Satish Chandra Verma.”

He said he had declined to sign the statement “knowing fully well that this would tantamount to falsely indicting my seniors.” The affidavit, which is coming up for hearing on Friday, says Mr. Mani was “continuously called, chased and stalked by many senior CBI officers, including one senior lady IPS officer recently posted in the CBI.”
