Former CBI chief resigns as UPSC Member

Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director A.P. Singh, whose name had cropped up during an Income-Tax probe against his friend and meat exporter Moin Qureshi, has resigned as Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Member.

Mr. Singh told the media that he put in his papers about a week ago, after a Mumbai court on December 30, dismissed charges against the BJP president Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati encounter cases observing that the allegations made in the CBI chargesheet had a political overtone.

Last June, the Income-Tax Department had served notices on Mr. Singh and his wife asking for details of their assets, bank accounts, credit/debit card statements and recent foreign visits made by them over the past few years.

The department zeroed in on the former CBI chief after it found that his meat exporter friend had taken on rent a Delhi office property owned by his mother. The IT Department also came across a series of BBM messages exchanged between Mr. Singh and Mr. Qureshi that raised suspicion about the nature of their association. “Many of the messages appeared to be in coded language,” said an official.

However, stating that he and Mr. Qureshi were good friends, Mr. Singh had earlier told The Hindu that the messages in question pertained to the period after he demitted office of CBI Director in November 2012.
