The death toll in the Assam floods has gone up to 61, while landslips have claimed the lives of 16. Besides, 10 others were reported missing in four districts. Of the 16 landslip deaths, 10 died in the city and six in Dima Hasao district.
An earthquake of 5.8 magnitude, with its epicenter at Phek in Nagaland, rocked the State on Sunday around 9.44 a.m. There was, however, no report of any damage.
Agriculture Minister Nilamani Sen Deka told The Hindu that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi were scheduled to visit the State on Monday to take stock of the flood damage, relief and rescue operations.
So far 1,93,655 people of 2,166 villages in 27 districts have been affected by floods. Altogether 4,84,555 people have been provided shelter in 768 camps, while lakhs of people have taken shelter on embankments and roads. Flood waters have so far damaged 11, 536 houses while 2, 667 roads were affected, damaged or overtopped.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who was away on an official tour to the United States, returned on Sunday and reviewed the flood situation in a meeting with his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials.
Brahmaputra and its 14 tributaries have so far breached 42 embankments in 14 districts, while the Longai river has breached one embankment in Karimganj district in the Barak Valley.
Breaches in roads occurred at 1,741 points, totalling 71.20 km. So far, seven timber bridges and 12 culverts were washed away, 191 timber bridges and 229 culverts damaged, one RCC bridge collapsed and approaches to 307 timber bridges and 262 RCC bridges damaged.
