Five soldiers were missing after multiple avalanches hit forward posts in north Kashmir’s Kupwara and Bandipora districts in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, one Army porter died in another avalanche.

“Two soldiers slipped down the slope in Naugam Sector, Kupwara. Three soldiers went missing from a forward post in Kanzalwan Sub-Sector, Bandipora’s Gurez, in the past 24 hours,” Srinagar-based Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told  The Hindu.

He said the rescue operations are underway. However, the missing soldiers remain trapped for several hours now.

Officials said a major avalanche swept through the installation of the Army’s 20-Dogra regiment in Kupwara. In Bandipora, a security installation of the Army’s 36 Rashtriya Rifles came under avalanches.

Kashmir witnessed a heavy snowfall in upper reaches since December 11 evening.
