Five militants killed in Kupwara encounter

Hot on the heels of the death of five Pakistani cadres of Hizbul Mujahideen in an encounter in Kangan area of the Valley on Friday, the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday claimed to have killed yet another group of five militants close to the LoC in Tangdar area in Kupwara district.

Official sources said the Army laid an ambush after information regarding the possibility of a militant group’s infiltration from across the river Neelum (Kishen Ganga) in Athmuqam area of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was received.

“Five militants were killed in the operation. Their bodies have been recovered along with six AK-47 rifles. The identification process is underway,” General Officer Commanding of Srinagar-based 15 Corps Lt Gen Gurmit Singh said.

With the death of five militants in an operation in Kangan area of Ganderbal district on Friday, as many as 10 heavily armed militants, almost all believed to be the Pakistani cadres of Hizbul Mujahideen, have got killed in the valley in the last 24 hours.

There have been no reports of collateral damage.
