After a day of protests over the death penalty pronounced on five fishermen, normalcy returned to the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram on Friday.

The rail track was restored by 9 a.m. and train services resumed soon. The stranded pilgrims heaved a sigh of relief. Police booked five cases in connection with violent incidents and warned action against those indulging in arson and road blockade.

Meanwhile, fishermen of Rameswaram, Pamban and Mandapam resolved not to venture into the sea till the five fishermen were released.

A fast will be observed on Saturday at the village of Thangachimadam.
