A 55-year-old woman died here on Saturday of swine flu, becoming the first victim of the disease in Himachal Pradesh.

She was referred to the Indira Gandhi Medical College from Sarkaghat in Mandi district, after she complained of fever and cough and tested positive for H1N1, Medical Superintendent K.S. Rana said. “She was brought here at a very late stage, when the lungs get affected and could not be saved,” he said.

A team of doctors was sent to her native place immediately and all eight family members who were in close contact with her were given prophylactic treatment, State Surveillance Officer Omesh Kumar Bharti said.
