First Scorpène submarine by Sept. 2016, says Navy Chief

‘Hope to ensure delivery of other five diesel-electric vessels with minimal delay’

June 13, 2014 02:40 am | Updated 02:40 am IST - Kochi:

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Robin Dhowan has said the construction of French-origin Scorpène-class submarines at Mazagon Dock was progressing well. The first submarine is slated for delivery by September 2016.

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a Naval Investiture Ceremony here on Thursday, Admiral Dhowan said the Navy hoped to ensure that the other five scheduled deliveries of the diesel-electric submarines built under Project 75 would be made with minimal delay.

Asked about the CBI’s arrest of two persons in an LTC documents forgery case involving 30 Navy officials, Admiral Dhowan said the Navy carried out thorough probes whenever such cases came to its notice.

On the proposed foreign direct investment in the defence sector, Admiral Dhowan said the force would follow “whatever decision taken by the government”.
