Fire in emergency ward of SSKM hospital in Kolkata

Fire at state's biggest referral hospital, the SSKM Hospital here sparked panic among patients and officials alike coming as it does after the devastating AMRI hospital fire in early December.

However, in another fire at a private nursing home in state's Purba Medinipur district many patients were spared a AMRI-type fate as fire and smoke engulfed the centrally-airconditioned hospital, this morning.

No casualties were reported.

Patients were evacuated after smoke engulfed the emergency ward of the endocrinology department this morning. The fire was believed to have been caused sparked by a faulty AC.

State's junior Health Minister Chadrima Bhattacharyya rushed to spot to oversee operations. The smoke which engulfed the department could be brought under control as there were large windows at this British -era hospital.

The fire broke out in the emergency ward of state-run SSKM hospital here on Wednesday morning, was brought under control within 30 minutes, fire brigade sources said.

All patients were safely evacuated, officials said.

The damage and cause of the fire has not been ascertained, officials said.
