Fight against terrorism is the fourth world war and India has been on the frontlines of this, President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said while hailing the valour and conviction of the Indian Armed Forces.

Taking oath as the President, he said a few minutes of peace will achieve far more than many years of war.

”...But the visible rewards of peace have also obscured the fact that the age of war is not over. We are in the midst of a fourth world war; the third was the Cold War, but it was very warm in Asia, Africa and Latin America till it ended in the 1990s,” said the President, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

“The war against terrorism is the fourth; and it is a world war because it can raise its evil head anywhere in the world,” the President said in his acceptance speech in the Central Hall of Parliament.

India has been on the frontlines of this war long before many other recognised its vicious depth or poisonous consequences, he said.

“I am proud of the valour, conviction and steely determination of our armed forces as they have fought this menace on our borders; of our brave police forces as they have met the enemy within; and of our people, who have defeated the terrorist trap by remaining calm in the face of extraordinary provocation,” Mr Mukherjee said.

Noting that the people of India have been “a beacon of maturity through the trauma of whiplash wounds”, he reminded those who instigate violence and perpetuate hatred that “few minutes of peace will achieve far more than many years of war”.

“India is content with itself, and driven by the will to sit on the high table of prosperity. It will not be deflected in its mission by noxious practitioners of terror,” the President said.

President Pranab Mukherjee has made made an excellent speech by talking about the greatest menace of the world today. He has rightly mentioned the current 4th world war which is so appropriate. Our army jawans are keeping their vigil, fighting day and night against this proxy war which is imposed upon us in our borders and our police force are working within our nation to fight against our enemies and India-haters in the teeth of heavy odds while safeguarding Indias secularism and open democracy.

After a long time,we have elevated a constitutional expert and a real gentleman par excellence to the highest office of our Presidency.Needless to stress, the expectations of the people of our land from all walks of life would be sky- high from Pranab and we hope he would rise to the occasion as one totally different from the other Presidents to deliver. We hope with the experience he has gained out of his seasoned political career,he would not only rise to the occasion with impeccable decisions but also would come forward to render his considered opinion and advice to both the ruling UPA and the opposition NDA at the appropriate time and the entire political system would benefit out of his unparallelled wisdom.

The war against terrorism can be done not only by the armed forces. They do wonderful job.We as a civilian should also join to do the best.we should give constructive support to the government The Power may change from one party to another but terrorism prevails. Who ever be in power irrespective of our affiliations the leaders should share their collective wisdom and contribute their best and prove that we are ONE against them to defuse them. We should identify the economic support given to them arrest the flow of funds to them Suitable laws can be enacted to strengthen the existing and the punishment should reach them at the earliest.Let us fight against Terrorism and fight for humanity

He was also talking of the poor and their growth etc. I recall the statement of PM stating 40% of Indians are under fed and it is a shame on the country. MS. Utsa Patnaik quoted this in chenna and said it is shedding crocodile tears. The situation is self inflicted wound and the whole situation because of the government policies. Yes even the president has no voice to talk of poor and inclusive growth when policies are designed for rich to become richer and poor poorer

Seed of Terrorism is pain ( of the exploited) planted in the soil of ignorance. So in order to root out terrorism, Dharma should be able to stand erect in the society. The rooting out of Adharma should start in the individual mind. People should have freedom of expression and means for decent living and they should be protected from exploitation.
If you inflict pain it generates anger and hatred ; when there is no venue to protest they indulge in terrorist activities.
Religious fundamentalism and terror is the result of ignorance and exploitation of the ignorant mass by vested interests
So before using weapon against terrorists ( which af course may have to be done when things goes out of control) eradicate injustice through developmental activities and ignorance through education.
Use MES wing of the Army to train all unemployed to develop skills; create, plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc. Create a National Workers corp like NCC

I also saw on the news the new President referred to the poor in India.
Would you as a reputed newspaper ask the right honorable President that why this was not addressed and action while he was in office in the government. Also appreciate if you could inform him that the fourth world war is against corruption among the ruling elite all over the world where India ranks first

The first sermon of our president is completed and people need not expect any
action further action at least for the present. The executive wing( cabinet) will be
inactive as usual. The Indians will become active only when the general elections are
due.

@ Santosh.
Fully agree wiith you mate, the politicians are full of hot air and low on action. It's funny how when they take up high office positions they make these big statements but never take strong action to resolve problems.

acts of terrorists, they have raised their voice against them. It was
politicians who remained calm, even after several attacks happened
(fearing of vote bank politics). This trend should be changed. It's
high time that our Politicians become LEADERS not just mere selfish
politicians.

Very true Mr Mukherjee, now what will you do to stop the terror emanating from Pakistan and Bangladesh?
Are these just hollow words for your audience?
How about stopping the violence in Assam and removing the illegal Bangladeshi migrants and helping to secure the borders there?
Actions speak louder than words Mr President.

Just like any other politician he talks. It is only the talk that makes an Indian neta climb higher. Common man would keep struggling whatever happens.
