A gunbattle on Tuesday broke out between militants and security forces in Kulgam district of south Kashmir here, a police spokesman said.

Acting on a specific information about the presence of militants, security forces cordoned a forest area in Kulgam, 70 km from here, this afternoon, the spokesman said.

The militants hiding in the area opened fire following which the security forces retaliated, he said.

The gunfight between the two sides was going on when reports last came in.

There was no immediate report of any casualty on either side, the spokesman said.
