The fasting YSR Congress Party president, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, was forcibly shifted to Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) late on Wednesday night after his health deteriorated.

Earlier in the day, a team of doctors from Osmania General Hospital advised him to call off his five-day-old fast after his blood sugar levels dropped and ketone bodies reached alarming levels.

As Mr. Jagan continued the fast, the police descended on the venue near the party’s office at Lotus Pond and shifted him to an ambulance around 11 p.m.

The police barricaded the roads leading to the venue to prevent party workers from reaching the camp, even as they made a vain bid to prevent the police from shifting Mr. Jagan. Police reportedly advised the authorities at the hospital to immediately administer IV fluids to the fasting leader. Mr. Jagan’s mother, Y.S. Vijayamma, reached the hospital.

Senior YSRC leader Konathala Ramakrishna accused the government of acting in a dictatorial manner. This was the second time in a month that Mr. Jagan observed an indefinite fast to protest the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.
