Concerned at the growing uneven sex ratio in the country, Union Minister Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said there would be a day when men would have no girls to marry and they may have to turn “gay.”

“The day is not far when there will be no girls to marry and we'll all become gays. That might happen,” he said, while trying to drive home the point that there should be no threat to girl child.

Addressing the ‘India Water Forum 2011' here in the presence of Vice President Hamid Ansari and his cabinet colleague Salman Khurshid, Dr. Abdullah said the number of males were growing and women were getting “eliminated“.

In 2001, there were 927 female children aged 0—six years for every 1,000 male children of the same age. In 2011, this dropped to 914 females for every 1,000 males, according to the provisional results of “Census 2011”

Apparently embarrassed by Dr. Abdullah's tongue in cheek remarks, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said it would not like to dignify it with an answer.

He, at the same time, shared Abdullah's concerns with the declining sex ratio saying it was a serious issue on which the society should contemplate.
