West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday expressed concern over the exodus of northeast people from South India and urged them not to pay heed to rumours.
“Do not listen to rumours. Please maintain peace and harmony,” Ms. Banerjee told people who gathered to offer prayers on Id-ul-Fitr here.
Ms. Banerjee said her government would extend all help to northeast people in the prevailing situation. “We do not support this. We will give all support to our brothers and sisters from the northeast.”
The State government had extended its support to people who have crossed over from Assam to Jalpaiguri district in north Bengal.
“The people who have taken shelter in the State are our guests. If some of them do not want to return we will continue to provide them shelter.”
“Unlike other political parties, I do not keep elections in mind while participating in Iftar ceremonies and celebrating Id.”
Id-ul-Fitr was celebrated in the State with the usual pomp and grandeur. People thronged mosques during the day.
