The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday expressed concern at the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka and urged the Manmohan Singh-led government to make all necessary political and diplomatic efforts to see that their full rehabilitation and resettlement was undertaken expeditiously.
Through a resolution adopted at the 20 party congress that concluded here, the CPI(M) said New Delhi should ensure that the Sri Lankan government conducted an independent and credible inquiry into reports of human rights violations and establish accountability. India should also ensure that a political settlement was reached based on devolution of powers for the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
The CPI(M) noted that the Tamils living in these two provinces suffered heavy losses and casualties in the last phase of the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It alleged that even after three years of end to the armed conflict, the Sri Lankan government had not fully undertaken resettlement and rehabilitation of the people in the areas and provided them with means of livelihood.
“Despite the evidence of atrocities against the people and serious human rights violations, the Sri Lankan government has not taken any serious measure to investigate such crimes and fix responsibility. Even the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission set up by the government have not been implemented,” the resolution said.
The Tamil people, it said, can live with dignity and equal rights within a united Sri Lanka only when there was a political settlement based on the provision of autonomy and devolution of powers for the Tamil-speaking areas. It stressed that despite the Rajapakse government's promises, so far no meaningful steps had been taken.
“Instead of arriving at a settlement through direct talks, the matter has been referred to a Parliamentary Select Committee,” the resolution said, adding that the party stood for a united Sri Lanka in which Tamil minorities could live in peace and harmony with the majority Sinhala community. It appealed to all democratic forces in Sri Lanka to ensure a political solution to the Tamil question.
Ensure that Sri Lanka conducts independent inquiry into human rights violation reports”
“Political settlement should be reached based on devolution of powers to Tamil-dominated provinces”

Many tamils prefer Tamil Ndu over Sri Lanka. TN is a heven compared to Sri Lanka. any way form you look at it. Indian Govt. should give tamils the option to move to Tamil Nadu.
Many tamils feel that Tamil Nadu is better for them. India should give the option for tamils to pick either Tamil Nadu or Sri Lanka.
What do Indians think they are? These people are just jokers or something? Does Sri Lanka tell Indians what they should do in Kashmir in favour of Pakistan? Do these jokers think that Sri Lanka would listen to India in resolving its internal matters?
When Sri Lankan President said 'There is no majority or minority' in Sri Lanka, but there is only the war on terrorism, he was really making a mockery of the six-decade ethnic question. His statement was born out under a peculiar type of nationalism.
It was the British who brought the whole of Ceylon into one unified system of government. Earlier the Kingdom of Kotte, Kingdom of Kandy and the Jaffna Kingdom were functioning as independent political entities.
The Soulberry Constitution which initiated parliamentary government gave the power to the majority community -the Sinhalese. The party that wanted to form the government always nurtured this kind of polity to form a majoritarian regime.
"There was only terrorism in Sri Lanka' is very regrettable remark from a leader of the country who now blames the other countries for the vote at the UN.
Funny...Sri Lanka must send India a message "ensure you treat Kashmiri's with dignity and acknowledge their right to self govern!"
It seems CPI (M) is concerned about Tamils in the North and East of
Sri Lanka and give morality lessons to Sri Lankans now. Just tell us
what action CPI(M) took when LTTE accused javans of the IPKF for
raping thousands of Tamil women, and maiming and murdering thousands
of Tamil men, women and children while they try to disarm LTTE and
try to force Tamils to accept 13A in 1988/9 against our will. And
LTTE humiliated India and took revange by blasting its PM Rajiv to
peices. But India kept quite for more than a decade. Now LTTE is no
more they have the guts to teach us moral conduct. Leela
Many tamils feel home at Tamil Nadu. India should take some of the
tamils back to Tamil Nadu.
Many Tamils don't think Sri Lanka is good for them. They prefer to go back to Tamil Nadu. India should allow some of them to come back
