Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday ordered a high-level probe into the resignation of an executive engineer, who accused a ruling party legislator of extortion bids and threats following which he had put in his papers, an official here said.

The enquiry has been entrusted to State Principal Secretary (Irrigation) K.S. Atoria, a government spokesperson told IANS. Executive Engineer Shiv Das resigned on Saturday night.

In his resignation letter addressed to Ms. Mayawati, Mr. Shiv Das alleged that Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator B.R. Ambedkar, who represents the Lakhna assembly constituency in Etawah district, was threatening to eliminate him if he failed to meet his extortionist demands.

The legislator was also alleged to have warned the officer that he would meet the same fate as Manoj Kumar Gupta, an executive engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) who was allegedly beaten to death by a BSP legislator and his goons in neighbouring Auraiya district in 2008. The engineer had also forwarded a copy of his letter to the Minister concerned, the Principal Secretary, District Magistrate, Etawah and few MLAs.

“Unparliamentary language”

Mr. Shivdas claimed that during the telephonic conversation, the MLA, while alleging that installation of tubewell was not recommended in his area, used unparliamentary language.
