EGoM discusses Supreme Court observation

August 10, 2010 12:47 am | Updated November 28, 2021 09:31 pm IST - NEW DELHI

The Empowered Group of Ministers met here on Monday to discuss the government's response to Supreme Court's observation about disbursal of foodgrains to the poor rather than allowing them to rot. The court had also questioned the inclusion of the Above Poverty Line population under the public distribution system that sells subsidised foodgrains to ration card-holders.

EGoM, chaired by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, has asked the Food Ministry to amend its response to the apex court's observations. The response has to be filed before the next date of hearing on August 12.

The government's reply will address the court's concern about rotting foodgrains and the storage system, and inform the court about the measures taken to bridge the gap between supply and demand.
