EC relaxes model code in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur

February 15, 2012 02:20 am | Updated 02:20 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Election Commission late on Tuesday night relaxed the model code of conduct to some extent in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Manipur, where the Assembly elections are over.

As per the new decision, the Ministers in the State could undertake tours of the districts and officers could accompany them. They can review implementation of the ongoing programmes, review with the field officers and call review meeting with officials in the headquarters.

Similarly the governments can call for bids, evaluate, finalise and award contracts. However officials, who are on election duty, are exempted from attending or accompanying the Ministers or their meetings, the EC in its order said.

The counting of votes in the States is due on March 6.
