Though it is difficult to predict an earthquake, the loss of human life and property can be minimised by taking some simple measures.
When an earthquake strikes, one must immediately seek a safe location under a table or desk, or along an interior wall away from windows, or hazardous objects, say experts. Those staying in high-rises should take the stairs on their way down, and not the elevator. It is always good to stay away from glass windows, mirrors, falling plaster, bricks and stones, and keep the back of the head and the eyes covered to minimise injury from flying debris.
Those outside the house should rush to an open space, away from tall buildings. If driving, one must stop quickly, away from bridges and flyovers, and must stay in the vehicle to avoid being hit by debris.
